The ATR 42 is a twin-turboprop built in France and Italy by ATR. The name 42 comes from the aircraft's standard seating that varies between 42 and 52 passengers.
The ATR 42 was designed as a regional transport and deliveries began in 1985. The ATR 42-500's first delivery was in 1995.
The ATR-500 is powered by two 2,400 shp PW127E engines designed for improved hot and high performance and increased cruise speed. The propellers are completely electrically controlled and are made from composite material.
The cabin nose has been greatly reduced because ot the new six-bladed propellers and better insulation. The ATR-500 has an increased maximum takeoff weight that allows for more cargo.
