The Bombardier Challenger 650 is a refined variant in the long-running Challenger 600-series platform, which originated with the CL-600 in the late 1970s. Launched in 2014 and entering service in 2015, the Challenger 650 builds upon the Challenger 605’s airframe while integrating key performance and avionics upgrades drawn from Bombardier’s Global series.
Core structural and aerodynamic elements, including the fuselage and supercritical wing, remain largely unchanged from the 605. However, the 650 benefits from updated General Electric CF34-3B MTO (Maximum Takeoff) engines, offering enhanced thrust (9,220 lbf each) and increased durability for more efficient long-haul operation. This upgrade supports a maximum takeoff weight of 48,200 pounds and contributes to a maximum range of approximately 4,000 nautical miles with typical eight-passenger payload.
Flight deck enhancements include the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 Advanced avionics suite, featuring improved situational awareness, synthetic vision, and graphical weather. The 650 also complies with current and emerging NextGen airspace requirements.
Cabin refinements represent a major focus of the redesign. The flat-floor interior spans 1,146 cubic feet, accommodating up to 12 passengers in executive or conference-style seating. Improved sound insulation, redesigned galley and lavatory areas, and an optional Ka-band high-speed connectivity system provide a modern in-flight experience aligned with large-cabin expectations.
With a competitive combination of range, cabin comfort, and direct operating costs, the Challenger 650 continues to serve corporate operators and charter fleets requiring a transcontinental large jet with flexible mission capability. Its proven airframe, updated systems, and support network ensure sustained value in the large jet market.
