Aerospatiale of France designed the aircraft as a trainer. Technically, the aircraft is built by SOCATA, a subsidiary of EADS. The TB-9 was first sold in 1990 and is powered by a 160 hp Lycoming engine. Because of its design as a trainer, handling is stable and predictable. In maximizing performance as a trainer, the fixed-pitch propeller is optimized for climb rather than cruise. Even so, its performance is on par with the Cessna 172. The cockpit has a modern design and layout, and is comfortable for its occupants.
