The Falcon 5X was introduced at the 2013 NBAA convention. It was formerly known as the Falcon SMS and represents the largest Falcon jet to date.
When Dassault launched the Falcon SMS concept in 2006, it was intended to compete against the Bombardier Challenger 300, Gulfstream G280 and Embraer Legacy 600.
When world financial markets collapsed in 2008, demand for SMS and smaller aircraft like the Challenger 300 and Gulfstream G280 dropped. It soon became apparent that those markets, particularly the lighter jets, might not fully recover for a decade or more. The large-cabin market rebounded in 2009.
Dassault engineers went back and completely changed the SMS design. By the end of 2009, the SMS became a very different aircraft. It would become the largest and most advanced Falcon Jet built to date, requiring an investment of well over $1 billion.
The Falcon 5X was designed to compete against the Gulfstream G450 and the Bombardier Global 5000. It is powered by two Snecma Silvercrest engines with a range of approximately 5,200 nautical miles.
