The IAI Astra SP is an upgraded iteration of the original Astra business jet developed by Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI). Based on the original Astra platform that debuted in the mid-1980s, the Astra SP introduced key enhancements in avionics, cabin comfort, and performance. It retained the same basic airframe but featured improved systems and greater reliability, positioning it as a more competitive midsize jet in its category.
The Astra SP first flew in 1989, with production beginning the same year. It remained in production until 1996, when it was succeeded by the Astra SPX, a further refinement that would later evolve into the Gulfstream G100 after Gulfstream Aerospace acquired the Astra program.
Powered by two Honeywell TFE731-3C-200G turbofan engines, the Astra SP offers solid performance for its class, including a maximum cruise speed of approximately 460 knots and a range of around 2,560 nautical miles. The aircraft has a maximum takeoff weight of 24,650 pounds and requires approximately 5,000 feet for takeoff, depending on conditions.
The cabin is typically configured for 6 to 7 passengers in a business layout, offering a functional and quiet environment for medium-range travel. The interior features improvements in insulation and noise reduction over the original Astra model, contributing to a more refined passenger experience. Cabin volume measures approximately 375 cubic feet.
While the Astra SP is no longer in production, it remains in use among charter operators and private owners seeking a reliable midsize platform with transcontinental capability, efficient operating costs, and solid handling characteristics.
