The Leonardo AW109 MKII is an upgraded iteration of the original Agusta A109 light twin-engine helicopter, offering enhanced avionics, higher performance, and refined mission flexibility. Developed by Agusta (now Leonardo Helicopters), the AW109 MKII builds on the legacy of the A109 series that first flew in 1971 and entered production in the mid-1970s.
The MKII variant was introduced in the 1980s as a modernization of the initial A109A model. Key upgrades included improved main rotor blades, reinforced airframe components, and the replacement of earlier powerplants with twin Allison 250-C20R/1 turboshaft engines, each producing approximately 450 shaft horsepower. These enhancements led to improved reliability, better single-engine performance, and smoother flight characteristics.
With a maximum cruise speed of 154 knots and a typical range of approximately 270 nautical miles, the AW109 MKII delivers excellent speed and efficiency for missions in both civil and paramilitary sectors. Its retractable landing gear reduces drag and contributes to its signature sleek profile and aerodynamic efficiency.
The cabin offers seating for up to six passengers in an executive configuration, housed within a spacious and pressurized cabin totaling approximately 125 cubic feet. The large sliding doors and flat floor design facilitate easy access for VIP passengers or stretcher loading in medical roles.
Thanks to its agility, speed, and compact footprint, the AW109 MKII became a popular platform for corporate transport, air ambulance services, and law enforcement agencies worldwide. Although newer variants like the AW109 Power and AW109 Grand have since succeeded it in production, the MKII remains active in service across multiple continents.
