The Bombardier Challenger 601-3AER is a special extended-range variant of the Challenger 601 series, developed to provide operators with increased range and endurance capabilities compared to the standard 601-3A. Evolving from the Challenger 600 platform first flown in 1978, the 601 family advanced Bombardier’s large-cabin business jet offering, and the 3AER built on this foundation by introducing performance refinements and additional fuel capacity.
First delivered in 1987, the Challenger 601-3AER shares its overall airframe design and systems with the 601-3A, but its defining upgrade lies in expanded fuel storage and optimized weight management. It is powered by two General Electric CF34-3A turbofan engines, each producing 8,650 pounds of thrust, allowing the aircraft to achieve intercontinental ranges of approximately 3,600 nautical miles. The aircraft maintains a maximum operating Mach of 0.85 and a long-range cruise speed of Mach 0.74. Its maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) is 45,100 pounds, with a balanced field takeoff distance of roughly 6,500 feet.
The 601-3AER retains the Challenger series’ hallmark wide-body cabin, offering generous space and comfort for passengers. Typically configured for eight business travelers, the aircraft provides flexible layouts such as executive seating, club-style arrangements, and divans. Bombardier emphasized cabin ergonomics, acoustics, and finishing details to enhance the onboard experience during extended international missions.
For operators, the Challenger 601-3AER was designed as a solution for longer-range operations without requiring a transition to the larger, more expensive Global series. It delivers reliable performance, proven systems, and a spacious cabin, making it attractive for corporate operators and charter fleets needing both comfort and extended mission capability in the large-cabin business jet category.
