The Cessna 402 was Cessna’s second 400-series twin. The 411 was re-engined with two 300 hp Continentals and an enlarged rudder. The 401 was a 402, but without an easily removable interior and cargo door. The Cessna 402A got a stretched nose and the 402B saw the addition of additional fuel. The 402B saw numerous evolutionary changes and, in 1979, added a pair of 325 hp Continentals and dropped the tip tanks in favor of more wingspan and a superior landing gear from the Cessna 414. The Cessna 402C was the best performing of the 402s. More than 1,900 of the 402 series were built from 1967 to 1985, and an additional 545 of the 401s from 1967 to 1972.
The Cessna 402 typically seats seven in executive configuration, or 10 in commuter seating configuration. With an easily removable interior and cargo door, swapping between people and cargo hauling is simple. Load carrying is why people generally get a Cessna 402 and speed is secondary. The handling is reported to be stable and unremarkable.
